Research & Development (R&D) Technician
Position Type: Temp-to-Hire

 Department: Engineering
 Reports To: Director of Engineering
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Research & Development (R&D) Technician to support our Engineering team in the design, development, testing, and optimization of innovative products and manufacturing processes. This role is ideal for individuals with strong mechanical aptitude, prototype development experience, and the ability to work in both laboratory and production environments.
The R&D Technician will assist with product development initiatives, build and evaluate prototypes, perform testing activities, and support engineering projects from concept through implementation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop airbag designs, fabric cut sets, and assembly patterns in accordance with customer specifications, regulatory standards, and functional requirements.
  • Build, assemble, and modify prototypes using engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, and technical schematics.
  • Conduct product testing and evaluation to support design validation and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Prepare samples, test materials, and provide technical support for engineering and product development projects.
  • Assist with product redesigns, engineering changes, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Operate textile manufacturing equipment and testing machinery in both laboratory and production environments.
  • Collect, document, and communicate test results, observations, and recommendations to the engineering team.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment while adhering to company quality and safety standards.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Technical degree, vocational certification, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical, manufacturing, engineering, or product development experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in a product design, engineering, or prototype development environment.
Required Skills
  • Experience using small hand tools, fabrication equipment, and measuring instruments.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement devices such as calipers, multimeters, and related testing equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in textile manufacturing, sewn products, airbags, or soft goods development.
  • Exposure to prototype fabrication, product testing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with engineering change processes and continuous improvement methodologies.
