The Industrial Setup Mechanic is responsible for installing, setting up, commissioning, adjusting, and maintaining production/lab equipment, ensuring that machines are ready for full-scale operation. This role is critical during equipment introductions, line changes, process improvements, scaleups, and quality transitions. The position works closely with engineering, production, quality, and maintenance teams to guarantee smooth, safe, efficient setups meeting the required specifications.
Education & Certification:
 •    High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school certificate in mechanical, electromechanical, industrial maintenance or related field preferred.
 •    Certifications in precision alignment, calibration, or setup processes are a plus.
 Experience:
 •    3 5+ years’ experience performing mechanical setups, installations, and/or commissioning in manufacturing environments—preferably in food, pharmaceuticals, or lab settings.
 •    Experience with changeovers, format or tooling changes, and equipment start ups.
 •    Familiarity with conveyors, mixers, fillers, packaging machinery, pumps, motors, gearboxes, sensors.
 Skills:
 •    Strong mechanical skills in alignment, adjustment, machine setup.
 •    Ability to read mechanical/electrical drawings, P&IDs, blueprints.
 •    Basic electrical/controls awareness (sensors, safety interlocks, wiring) helpful.
 •    Skilled in using precision tools (levels, dial indicators, laser alignment tools, torque wrenches).
 •    Excellent troubleshooting skills—able to isolate sources of vibration, misalignment, leaks, or mechanical failures.
 •    Good communication and teamwork—able to coordinate with multiple disciplines (engineering, quality, production).

 Working Conditions
 •    Work in a production/lab environment with exposure to noise, moving parts, temperature/humidity variations, possibly wet or sanitary clean conditions.
 •    Physical demands: lifting (<50 100 lbs), climbing ladders, working at heights, in confined spaces.
 •    Some exposure to chemicals or lubricants, so PPE required.
 •    May require flexibility in hours for startup periods, weekend/set up events, or off shift support.

Responsibilities of position





Equipment Installation & Setup:
 o    Unpack, move, level, anchor, align, and calibrate new equipment or machinery.
 o    Install plugins, adjust change parts, verify fit, perform initial trials.
 o    Commission machines: run test batches, fine tune settings to meet specifications (speed, flow, temperature, mixing times, etc.).
 o    Validate conveyor system layouts, material flow, guards, safety interlocks, sensors.
 •    Changeovers & Format Changes:
 o    Lead or assist line changeovers when switching product formats—change tooling, molds, dies, belts, guides, etc.
 o    Optimize changeover procedures to reduce downtime and rejects.
 •    Mechanical & Technical Adjustments:
 o    Perform mechanical alignments (shafts, pulleys, bearings), tension belts/chains, ensure proper lubrication.
 o    Adjust or repair mechanical/structural components as needed during setup and initial operation.
 •    Collaboration & Coordination:
 o    Work with production, quality, and engineering to ensure equipment setup meets performance, safety, and quality standards.
 o    Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT) as relevant.
 o    Follow, implement, and sometimes develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for setups and hand offs.
 •    Safety & Compliance:
 o    Ensure equipment is setup in compliance with safety regulations (OSHA), food safety / Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), hygiene standards, and environmental / sanitation requirements.
 o    Perform lock out/tag out (LOTO), machine guarding, safety interlocks checks.
 •    Documentation:
 o    Record setup parameters, baseline performance data, test results, changeover times, issues encountered.
 o    Maintain setup checklists, changeover guides, calibration and alignment records.
 o    Report deviations and recommend improvements.
 •    Maintenance Hand Over:
 o    After setup, ensure maintenance operations can support the machine (spares, lubrication points, alignment, preventive schedule).
 o    Train maintenance / production operators on proper care during startup period.
 •    Continuous Improvement:
 o    Identify opportunities during setup to reduce changeover time, improve reliability, or enhance performance.
 o    Suggest design or process modifications to facilitate faster, safer setups.
 •    Emergency Support:
 o    Be on call or available to respond to issues that arise during ramp ups or early production runs.
