Pay and Hours: starting at 60k
The Government & Defense Freight Forwarding Specialist is responsible for coordinating and managing domestic and international transportation of time-critical, high-value, and sensitive cargo for government agencies, military organizations, defense contractors. This position requires strict compliance with government regulations, security requirements, export controls, and customer-specific procedures while ensuring on-time delivery and exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate air, ocean, and ground shipments for Government & Defense customers.
- Manage time-critical, mission-essential, and high-priority freight movements.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including:
- ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)
- EAR (Export Administration Regulations)
- AES Filing Requirements
- TSA Regulations
- Dangerous Goods/IATA Regulations
- Customs and Border Protection Requirements
- Prepare and review shipping documentation, including:
- Commercial Invoices
- Packing Lists
- Export Declarations
- Air Waybills
- Bills of Lading
- Certificates and Government Documentation
- Coordinate with carriers, airlines, trucking companies, customs brokers, warehouses, and overseas agents.
- Monitor shipments from origin to final destination and proactively resolve delays or exceptions.
- Provide customers with timely shipment updates and status reports.
- Ensure proper handling of classified, controlled, or sensitive cargo.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers, carriers, and government agencies.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of freight forwarding experience, preferably in air export.
- Experience handling Government, Defense, Military shipments preferred.
- Strong understanding of:
- International Air Freight Operations
- Export Compliance
- Customs Procedures
- Dangerous Goods Regulations
- Knowledge of ITAR and EAR regulations highly preferred.
- Experience with freight forwarding software systems (CargoWise, Magaya, or similar).
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- DG/IATA Certification.
- TSA Known Shipper knowledge.
- Familiarity with military logistics requirements.
- Security clearance or eligibility to obtain one is a plus.
- Experience working with Department of Defense (DoD), NATO, Foreign Military Sales (FMS), or defense contractors.
- 100% compliance with export and security regulations.
- Proactive communication with customers and stakeholders.
- On-time execution of critical shipments.
- Rapid response to shipment exceptions and emergencies.
- Accurate documentation and reporting.
- Consistent delivery of exceptional customer service.
